DENVER AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BUILT IN 1910 Denver Avenue School. With an absolute enrollment of 820 during the first semester of 1930-1931, this school was housed in a 21-classroom building with a combination auditorium and cafeteria. Designed by Waller and Field and constructed in multicolored brick, Denver Avenue's original building is partially surrounded by two well-designed additions under President Roosevelt's Beautification Project that echo the original building style.

Rufino Mendoza Sr. is regarded as a pioneer in leading the campaign for Hispanics and addressing the concerns effecting the education of our children in the district. Mr. Mendoza began his efforts in 1972 with the Mexican American Educational Advisory Committee and served as a chairman from 1972-1982.

Mr. Mendoza was instrumental in identifying specific needs of the Hispanic Community in Curriculum and Instruction, in the bilingual program, in Personnel and Staff Development, and in School Policies.

Mr. Mendoza believed in the general principle that every child could learn, if only given an opportunity. His dedication, devotion, and tireless effort to improve educational opportunities for Hispanic children in our school district is well known and documented.

It is in recognition of his leadership as spokesman and advocate for quality education for Hispanics in the school district, the former Denver Avenue school was renamed after him.
