Wake Forest University is coeducational and has a strong academic orientation. It was founded in 1834 in Wake County, North Carolina. The School of Law was established in 1894; the School of Medicine, in 1902; the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, in 1961; the Babcock Graduate School of Management, in 1969; the School of Business and Accountancy, in 1980 (in 1995, the name was changed to the Wayne Calloway School of Business and Accountancy); and the School of Divinity, in 1999. In 1941, the School of Medicine moved to Winston-Salem, where it became affiliated with North Carolina Baptist Hospital and was renamed the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest College. In 1997, the name was changed to Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The remaining divisions of the institution moved to Winston-Salem in 1956, following acceptance of a Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation proposal to build a new campus under substantial continuing endowment. In 1967, the college’s augmented character was recognized by the change in name to Wake Forest University. The University prides itself on its strong arts and sciences and basic medical sciences programs, all of which emphasize close student-professor interaction.
