Tuskahoma was originally spelled Tushka Homma and was the last capitol of the Choctaw Nation, before Oklahoma statehood. The word means "home of the red warrior." A post office was established here on February 27, 1884

Two miles North of town is the Choctaw Nation Council House which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. It currently contains a museum of the Choctaw Nation.
