Harry S. Van Meter (May 5, 1879 - February 21, 1907) was the first policeman in Fresno to die in the line of duty. He was shot to death while investigating a property crime in progress - said to be the prime suspect in the murder of a Fresno County Sheriff Deputy, the suspect was never brought to justice.
