This is the site of the discovery of the Pershore yellow egg plum.
In 1833 George Crooks the landlord of the Butchers Arms public house in preist lane Pershore, while out walking in Tiddesley wood came across a yellow plum, This was a wild plum tree and at that time had not been seen before. George named this the Pershore Egg Plum. It has a high fruit sugar content and from then on was growen in and around Pershore, Mainly for the jam trade, and at one point Pershore had two jam factories processing the many orchards of plum grown here.
In 1890 the Pershore Egg Plum was cross with a wild victoria plum to create the Pershore Purple Plum.
Both of these plums are grown in Pershore and as you can see from the photo's there are still 'wild' yellow egg plum trees in the location that George first discoverd them.
