The building was designed by Oscar Cobb of Chicago, Illinois. The cornerstone was laid in 1902, and the building was dedicated on St. John's Day, June 24, 1903.

The Masonic Lodge has a website, which can give interior photographs, as well as local information about the Lodge.

An Ohio Historical Marker standing near the corner of the building reads:

Lodge of Amity No. 5
Free and Accepted Masons

The Lodge of Amity, one of the six founding lodges of the Grand Lodge of Ohio, was chartered on June 24, 1805, and first met in the Benoni Pierce hotel at the northeast corner of Main and Fifth Streets, Zanesville. This marker was erected in celebration of Ohio's 175th anniversary.
