Petersen Park and the Petersen House are both named for one of Tempe’s true pioneers, Niels Petersen.

This park is right outside the Niels Petersen house/museum. Petersen was one of the wealthiest men in the area in the late 1800's, working to build dams, canals, ditches, and growing crops. He worked for Charles Hayden and his freighting business as well (see downtown Tempe for Hayden's legacy).
His house has been restored and turned into a museum, and a small park is right outside to the east.
