Firehall No. 1

Architect: William T. Whiteaway

This building served as the Vancouver Fire Department headquarters from its completion in 1907 until 1951. Vancouver is said to have had the first motorized fire department in North America and although this building housed horse-drawn trucks in its early years, it was originally designed for motor trucks. The impressive brick arches and terra cotta panels were retained as part of the adaptive re-use of the building as a theatre by architect Roger Hughes in 1976.
