War memorial to the men and women of Brighton who fell in the
First World War.
Dated 1922 on the borough coat of arms. By John W Simpson. Portland stone, bronze.
Designed in the form of a Roman water garden, and having 3
parts: a shallow pool and fountain; a screen of columns along
the north side of the pool, incorporating a small shrine; and
2 bronze pylons standing at the north-west and north-east
corners of the screen.
Simplified Classical style.
The pool is roughly square in plan, but chamfered at the
south-west and south-east corners, and has re-entrant angles
at the other corners. Seen from the south, the screen has a
domed centrepiece which carries on its face a panel inscribed
'HIGH SEAS/ NORTH SEAS/ HOME SEAS/ ARCTIC BALTIC/
MEDITERRANEAN/ FRANCE AND/ FLANDERS/ PALESTINE/ MESOPOTAMIA/
RUSSIA/ ITALY/ MACEDONIA/ DARDANELLES'; above this is the coat
of arms of the borough of Brighton and a small dome. The
screen consists of 3 bays either side of the centrepiece, with
columns square in plan and plain except for incised vertical
lines on the upper third; these support an entablature; and
there are wings at the corners formed by 4 columns on a square
plan, which create the re-entrant angles of the pool. From the
north, the centrepiece is open below the dome and flanked by
columns, which enclose an altar and bronze plaque stating the
purposes of the memorial. The pylons are inscribed with the
names of the 2,597 men and 3 women of Brighton who fell in the
War.
At the other end of the gardens stands an obelisk to those who fell in the Eqyptian campaign.
