This Norman Soldier weathervane was placed here in 1985.
It tops the domed tower built on the castle keep in the 18th century by the then MP for Colchester, Charles Gray. The keep might have been much higher but the upper part was demolished some 300 years ago so Charles Gray restored it and added the tower and tiled the roof. The keep was the town museum from 1855 and today holds various exhibitions and historical displays.
