The center of the memorial is a sculpture made out of the words of the playright. It reads: "Like a saint's vision of beatitude. Like the veil of things as they seem drawn back by an unseen hand. For a second you see—and seeing the secret, are the secret. For a second there is meaning! Then the hand lets the veil fall and you are alone, lost in the fog again, and you stumble on toward nowhere, for no good reason!".
Around the sculpture are small plaques about O'Neill. One plaque talks about his Nobel Prize. He was the only American playwright to win the prize. O'Neill said about the prize: "I feel so deeply that it is not only my work which is being honored, but the work of all my colleagues in America - that this Nobel Prize is a symbol of the recognition by Europe of the coming-of-age of the American theatre."
