"Constructed in 1898-1910, the Fred Gottschalk's Grocery Store building typifies the modest, masonry, commercial architecture of the late 19th century. The structure's importance in the arch1tectural, historical and present urban des1gn fabr1c 1S underscored by the fact that it is one of the few· remaining, neighborhood grocery store buildings still standing in Springfield. It is believed to be the best, and most well preserved, example of such a facility in the community. The structure is also an architectural node tl1at marks the southwest corner of the State Capitol Complex. During the store's 73 years existence (in this building), it pioneered in providing a telephone shopping system and personalized service for its customers, including many of the city's leading families and the governor's mansion. As such it served as a cultural landmark as well as an architectural focal point." - National Register Nomination form
