According to an articleClick for news article to open in new window in the Free Lance-Star dated January 17, 1987, Edward Hughes of Troop 1407 chose a landscape project at the Hartwood Presbyterian Church to earn his Eagle Scout rank. He reseeded and planted new bushes and trees in the church's cemetery. Other members of his troop helped to locate and mark some of the unidentified graves.

Eddie and his troop also built two meditation benches that sit in front of the church. The benches are constructed from two of the original steps from the Presbyterian Church of Fredericksburg, VA. The stone for the steps was quarried at Government Island in Stafford County in 1831. One of the benches has a small gold plaque that reads:

Edward S. Hughes' Eagle Scout Project
July 28, 1986
~~~
"A Scout is reverent toward God.
He is faithful in his religious duties.
He respects the beliefs of others."
These are two of the original steps from
The Presbyterian Church, Fredericksburg, VA.
As a bonus, nearby at the treeline of the cemetery, is the Meditation Trail. There is no indication that this was part of Eddie's project, but the wooden sign is carved with a Boy Scout emblem and Troop 1717. (Eddie was Troop 1407.) Research revealed no further information on the origins of this trail (perhaps it is part of an ongoing Eagle project), but a visit is well worth it. A trail leads a short way to a small clearing in the woods with three stone benches arranged in a semi-circle at a wooden cross. It is located at:
