Tarn Hows is probably the most visited tourist attraction in the Lake District with its backdrop of more distant fells.

Tarn Hows is owned by the National Trust, who were bequeathed the remainder of the estate by Beatrix Potter in her will. The path around is wheel chair accessible with a few slight inclines. The water often freezes over thick enough to skate on as the Tarn Hows is less than 10 metres deep. The water level has been raised to create one tarn by a spillway at the top of Tom Gill.
