Everyone in Chicago knows "26th & California" as an infamous location. Hopefully your worst experience there will be jury duty. Most people's heads are hanging low when they enter, but you have to look up to see this waymark.

The Courthouse was built in 1927 by Hall, Lawrence and Ratcliffe. It was built here to replace the prior courthouse located closer to downtown Chicago (featured in waymark (visit link) ) due to the need for a bigger facility. Also, the site's proximity to the (formerly named) Bridewell Prison, now know as Cook County Jail, was a plus. See (visit link) for more information.

The Classical exterior is adorned by a sculptural program done by Peter Toneman of Joseph Dux Studios and the Indiana Limestone Company. Above each of the giant Doric columns are the 8 allegorical figures, along with S.P.Q.C. (Chicago's variant of the S.P.Q.R. - the Senate and People of Rome) inscribed under adjacent eagle panels. From my observation, the actual order of the sculptures from left to right should be:
Might (warrior with sword), Liberty (woman holding torch), Wisdom (man with owl & book), Justice (woman with scale & sword), Law (man with 10 Commandments), Peace (woman with sheaf & dove), Truth (man with open palms)and Love (woman cradling infant).
