This cross is typical of the mission crosses 'Croix de mission" found in alpine villages in France. Like sundials, these crosses are part of the folk art patrimony of the area. The cross has all the instruments used to torture and cruxifiy Christ as in the gospel descriptions of his passion and death: wooden cross, crown of thorns, whips, hammer, nails, spear, knife on lance etc.

There are five mission crosses in St Veran. Waymarks for some of others will follow.
