On the Bridgewater State College campus in Bridgewater Mass., not far from it's iconic Boyden Hall, sits a rock with a plaque attached to it. The plaque reads:

"Site of
first
state normal
school building
in
America
1846"

A "normal school" is was a school created to train high school graduates to be teachers. The purpose of these schools was to establish teaching standards, otherwise known as "norms", how they got the name "normal". Most such schools are now referred to as teachers' colleges. Though, in some places, the term normal school is still used.
