Before Delaware Lake was created for flood control back in 1951, the area was home to the Delaware Indians, who fished and hunted here. In the 1800's as the area was being settled, nearby US 23 was created as a wagon trail for travelers headed to Lake Erie. Much of the land was eventually cleared and farms began popping all over.
This farm would have been one of several in the area that was purchased and removed to create Delaware Lake, and eventually the surrounding Ohio State Park. For whatever reason the silo was left here, while everything else was torn down. You can still see the foundation of the barn and other buildings in the area. There is also a clearing in the woods where a road or driveway once ran through there. In other areas of the park one can find foundations of silos that were torn down, so I'm unsure why this one was left. Maybe it wasn't worth the effort since this isn't a developed part of the park, which would discourage many from visiting the area.
The silo is easily seen from the main part of Delaware State Park from the beach area and the Buckeye Grove picnic area. It's my suggestion to visit and photograph the silo from here. To actually get to the silo involves hiking about 1.3 miles round trip from the closest parking. While the area is mostly flat, it is all wildlife area...meaning it's mostly undeveloped, and has lots of brush, thorns, mud, ticks, and poison ivy. Much of the walk to and from the silo involved following narrow deer trail, and bushwhacking.
The nearest parking to the actual silo can be found at N 40 22.323 W 083 03.137. Or you can park at approximately N 40 22.624 W 083 03.529 and walk a few feet on well maintained grass to the water's edge and see it from there. I really can't say if there is an easy to get to the silo, as I certainly didn't find it.
