Each of the 75 provinces of Thailand has a "City Pillar Shrine". These shrines house the tutelary spirit of the Province, and are areas of respect, worship and prayer. Each shrine has a different history, and there is a wide variation in the design of each shrine. The term in the Thai language is 'Lak Mueang', difficult for westerners to pronounce correctly.
The Shrine for Saraburi is one of the smaller shrines. It is in the Thai style, a small single roomed structure, with four entrances. As with many such shrines this is located in the government precinct of the city. The Shrine contains a golden pillar (the City Pillar), several images of the Buddha, photographs of the King and Queen of Thailand, and a variety of Thai and local province icons and imagery. Unlike most of the shrines I have seen there is no designated prayer area or bell.
The Shrine is attractively designed and well maintained.
Photography is permitted. Thais generally appreciate westerners taking an interest in their culture, however: courtesy, removing shoes, and a donation, are recommended.
Note: as at April 2010 the Shrine is located ~200m west of the location given on Google Maps.
