Most sundials in Malta are vertical. This horizontal sundial was designed by Prof Frank Ventura, of Malta University, Author of the book L-Astronomija f’Malta and several papers on the orientation of the temples on Malta. We met when I gave my presentation “Timelines” to the Malta Astronomical Society.

The sundial is raised about 20” above grade level and is about 15 ft in diameter. The simple design within an ellipse has declination lines for the solstices and equinox, a noon analemma and a small longitude correction. I don’t know why the equinox line is not the same in the morning and afternoon or why the analemma meridian does not touch both solstice lines. Unfortunately we visited this sundial on a rainy day and I had no opportunity to return.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
