In celebrating 100 years of Rotary International service and the centenary of Levin Borough, the Rotary Club of Levin proposed a project for a bronze statue of a market gardener to recognise the history and contribution of horticulture to the town. In view of the major significance of horticulture to the district it was felt that a market gardener represented the character of the town and district.
The concept gained community support and the resultant larger than life size statue, made by Wellington sculptor Dennis Hall, was unveiled by Her Excellency the Governor-General Dame Sylvia Cartwright on 29 April 2005.
The statue is situated outside the entrance to Levin Mall in Oxford Street, the main shopping street. The sculpture is a tribute to the contribution made by Chinese people in the development of the Horowhenua Region, especially in the horticultural field.
