This institute is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Sitting atop a mesa overlooking Boulder, the I.M.Pei-designed building is also a "Great Building of the World".
From their webpage: "NCAR’s activities as an integrator, innovator, and community builder are contributing to the development of a predictive Earth system science that can help sustain Earth’s habitability, improve environmental quality, safeguard human health, reduce the impacts of natural disasters, and increase economic productivity."
Public tours, school activities, teacher workshops, and interactive science exhibits are available in the visitor's center.
