Parking is available at the trail head. This trail is not recommended in winter or bad weather and requires good level of fitness and some experience of bush walking (and good boots). The tracks are moderately well maintained and frequently used. The route from the Wharawhara road end involves several river crossings which would be dangerous after heavy rain but which are easy in summer or good weather. The top of Cashmore's Clearing is always boggy and slippery under foot. Attractive lichen, fungi and other plant life can be viewed from the trail
