The Chinese Gardens is a tribute the many Chinese that came to work in the gold rush during the 1860s in Otago. Dunedin was the commercial hub for this period.

When celebrating its sesquicentennial in 1998 it was mentioned that a Chinese garden be created. Working with its Sister City, Shanghai, the gardens was fully created there then disassembled and shipped to Dunedin.
