The old Bassingbourn gas works created the village's own street lighting from 1866. It was established by local men and one farmer. The company was known as The Bassingbourn Gas Co. which unfortunately went bankrupt by 1895. A liquidator sold the works including a brick gas holder and a retort house which was still standing in 1977 at the east of Spring Lane.
This tall chimney stands beside an old piece of machinery and preserved building which has a plaque stating it belongs to the Country Landowners Association and has a 1999 Buildings Award.
