Witton Gilbert Dene lies south of the village, south of the A691 village bypass, along the course of the Dene Burn. There are three access points, 1) from the village by crossing the A691 from Front Street, 2) by crossing the bypass at high level, again from Front Street, using the bridge on the lane leading to the church and turning left, or 3) by the southern entrance from the fields and paths along the River Browney.
There are some information boards placed here by Durham County Council, this one at the southern entrance point describes the birds which may be seen throughout the year. Another board, at the northern end, tells of the planting of 4,400 trees by the Rev.Dr.Richard Richardson in 1828 to 'create a pleasant wilderness'. A lot of these trees have now been cut down but sufficient remain to make this a pleasant and quiet place to walk.
Location Name: Wittin Gilbert Dene.
