Te Kuiti, known as the "Shearing Capital of the World" is the principal urban area of the Waitomo District and located on State Highway 3, 18km south of Otorohanga.
Te Kuiti stakes its claim as the shearing capital of the world during the New Zealand Shearing Championships held at Easter. Past and present champions include Brian Quinn, David Fagan and Alan MacDonald who all learnt the skills of shearing in the region. On the final day more than 2000 sheep make a 2km dash down the main street in the Running of the Sheep.
In the town centre you will also find a huge statue of a sheep being shorn! Standing at 7 metres tall, it is the largest statue in the world celebrating shearing!
