The church is dedicated to the image of Christ "not made by hand" - see the legend of Edessa at Wikipedia.
The Zachatyevsky monastery is the oldest woman monastery in Moscow, founded by St. Alexis in 1358. In 1696 the monastery wall was repaired and this new church has been built.

The main monastery church, Church of the Birth of the Blessed Mother of God, was built in 1805-1807, torn down in 1930s and started to be rebuilt again in 2005.

Photographing inside the monastery is prohibited without a permit from the abbess.
