The church construction was sponsored by T.N.Streshnev, the owner of Uzkoe settlement: he planned it to be the main church of a new monastery. The monastery was not built but the church assembled a large collection of icons painted by the best Russian artists of that time.

In 1930 the church was taken away from the Russian Orthodox Church and given to the Russian Academy of Sciences which used it as a archive. The collection of the icons disappeared without a trace, only the Kazan icon of the Mother of God remained.

The church was returned to the Orthodox Church in 1990 and since 1992 the worships are being performed here again.
