The Rangipo Dam, part of the Tongariro Hydro Scheme, is the meeting place for waters flowing through two underground tunnels, the Moawhango Tunnel carrying water from the Moawhango Dam, eastern slopes of Ruapehu and the western slopes of the Kaimanawa Ranges and the other carrying water from the nearby Waihohonu Stream diverted via the 960-metre (3,100 ft) Waihohonu Tunnel to Rangipo Dam.
This Ministry of Works (MOW)survey marker No BMD1 is part of the Tongariro Hydro Scheme and is set into the concrete on the side of the hydro structure where the Waihohonu stream water enters the Waihohonu Tunnel, at the end of a short side road off the Rangipo Dam road which branches off the Desert Road.
