The final resting place of the Governor of Barbados, his Excellency William Spry Esq. He served as governor from 1768 to 1772 and now rests in the church yard cemetery of the Cathedral of Saint Michaels in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The tombstone inscription reads: “Here lies the remains of his Excellency William Spry Esq. Captain General Governor Chancellor ordinary and Vice-Admiral of the Island of Barbados; He Dyed the 3rd day of Sept 1772 aged 43 years.”

He was buried on September 4, 1772. He arrived as governor on February 11, 1768. His wife was the daughter of Thomas Pitt of Bocconic and niece of the Earl of Chatham and she died October 3, 1769. William Spry had a daughter Wilhelmina who was his sole living heir and was married in 1792 to Sir W. Earle W. Bart becoming Lady Welby and had a large family.

He was Governor of Barbados from 1768 to 1772

After William Spry's first wife died, he then married Katherine Cholmeley, the widow of Hamlet Fairchild of Barbados. Katherine was the mother of Wilhelmina.
