This is Gaylord School, a One-Room Schoolhouse located in Gaylordsville, CT. It was built in 1740, fifteen years after the town was founded.

In 1850, the school was in need of a host of repairs. After 8 years of discussions, trying to decide whether to repair it or replace it, it was decided to move the school a short distance onto a new foundation and repair it.

In 1872, the school had become to small and additions were added to both the north and south ends. A host of repairs were also made to the school at this time as well.

In 1935, electric lights were installed and the coal stove was replaced by an oil heater.

1952 saw the addition of running water largely through the efforts of the parents of the students.

The schoolhouse was closed in 1967 when it was determined that it was no longer practical to keep the school open. This had been the last one-room school house left in the state.

The school is open every Sunday from 2 PM to 5 PM during July and August. For more information contact the Gaylordsville Historical Society, P.O. Box 25, Gaylordsville, CT 06755
