The first Post Office at St Marys was established on 1 October 1840 by William Morton. William didn't receive a salary but was allowed to keep 20% of the value of all stamps sold.
During the next 35 years the Post Office had six postmasters and various locations around St Marys.
In December 1875 Ellen Pegus was appointed Junior Operator at the new South Creek Telegraph office and a day after that appointment she was appointed the Postmistress at St Marys.
Mr. Hackett's cottage, formally the "Woolpack Inn" on the East bank of South Creek was rented for 20 pounds per Annum, becoming the Post and Telegraph office.
As with a lot of buildings of historical importance, the council has built a fence around this one and then left it to the elements.
