Ocean County Park, off Route 88 in Lakewood, NJ, was once the 323 acre vacation estate of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller. In 1902, John D. Rockefeller purchased this estate and used it for his summer residence until his death in 1937. After his death, his family donated the estate to the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders to be used as a county park.

Unfortunately, budgeting reasons forced the mansion to be demolished, but many of the other structures remain. The old carraige house is now home to the Ocean County Police Academy.

My husband grew up in Lakewood in the 1950's and remembers this park being called "Rocky's Place." In 1965, a contest was held for local children to name the catch-and-release children's fishing pond. Debrah Rehder, age 10, came up with the fantastic name of "Lake Fishigan" for the pond.

Today, this pond is for catch-and-release fishing for children under 14 years of age.
