Kamehameha I, also known as Kamehameha the Great, is most known for conquering the Hawaiian Islands and formally establishing the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810. Kamehameha united all the islands under his rule.
This statue, which stands in the Wailoa River State Park, on the bayfront in Hilo, Hawaii, is the fourth depiction of Kamehameha created by sculptor Thomas Ridgeway Gould (1818-1881). It stands nearly 14 feet high, and depicts this great monarch in Bronze and Gold.
This particular statue was originally supposed to be placed on the island of Kauai, but Native Hawaiians protested, as Kauai was not conquered by Kamehameha, but came into the union peacefully. So, it was dedictaed to Hilo in June 1997.
