For $2 you can get a blank copper slug 'smashed' with an image of a goldpan and saying 'Arrowtown, NZ' on it. This pennysmasher is just inside the doors of the Lake District Museum.
To get around defacing Queen Elizabeth's image the pennysmasher uses blank copper pieces. In addition, New Zealand got rid of 1¢ and 5¢ coins. And while the current 10¢ is made from a copper colour metal, it wouldn't be a penny needing to be smashed.
