"Irazu Volcano National Park is located on the Central Volcanic Range, 31 km northeast of the city of Carthage. It was established as park through Order No. 6 of Act No. 1917 of the Instituto Costarricense 30 July 1955. . The National Park Service manages the park since 1970. Its area is 2.309 hectares.


The Irazu is an active volcano with a long history of eruptions and eruptive cycles.It born several rivers that feed the river basins Chirripó Reventazon River and Rio Sarapiqui River Tárcoles.

The origin of its name from an Indian village that existed on the slopes of the volcano called Iztarú, word by which they meant hill of the tremor and thunder. However, over the years, as a result of verbal communication, it changed its name to Irazu.

One of the most visited areas of the system, both domestic and international tourists.


The Irazu is a stratovolcano (distinct layers of volcanic material) of 3,432 meters, irregular shaped subconical, Strombolian CHARACTERISTICS (with violent eruptions) and five different craters. The most important of its recent activity are the main crater, nearly circular and highly inclined walls. It measures 1050 meters in diameter and 300 feet deep. Crater Diego Hague 600 meters in diameter and 100 feet deep. Other craters are on Playa Hermosa, Laguna and pyroclastic.

The vegetation at the higher sub-alpine rain paramo Flat characteristics, life zone that develops at altitudes above 3,300 meters to 4,000 meters, typical of the Andean regions. Note that is the only place in the Central Volcanic Range, which has this type of living area, with species such as myrtle and arracachillo.

There are also almost pure oak forest oak tree bark hard, abundant in the Atlantic sector of the volcano. They are patches of primary vegetation, including living in the area of montane rainforest on the banks of rivers, northeastern sector of the main crater, with species such as black oak, cage, sage, killers of people, parrot, shallots, candelillo, beef tongue and poor umbrella.

Among the highlights bird species such as reed volcanero the carpenter fronted the yigüirro, the goldfinch, the brown owl, the red climber, the zacatera, the pitorreal and several species of hummingbirds. Some mammals that can be seen are the wild rabbit, coyote, armadillo, porcupine, weasels, red squirrels and Caucel.
