Prominently located in the "Plaza Mayor" or central park of Cartago (Costa Rica's first capital city), is the ruins of the church that is known as St. Bartholomew Temple (also known as ruins of the Santiago Apóstol church). Cartago sits at the base of the active Irazu volcano (elevation is 1440 meters), and is subject to frequent tremors, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.
The church was First dedicated in 1575, and destroyed in that same year by an earthquake. It was rebuilt but a second severe earthquake destroyed it in 1910. There is a local legend that claims it was destroyed as divine punishment for the actions of an amorous priest. Locals consider the destruction as an omen and left the church ruins standing. The church grounds are now the central park for the city of Cartago with quiet paths and plenty of benches. The ruins themselves are closed off, but the park itself is very pretty and well used.
