The Battle of Glendale (a.k.a. Frayser's Farm, Frazier's Farm, Nelson's Farm, or Riddell's Shop) began when Confederate General Benjamin Huger engaged Union forces in an artillery duel. According the General Robert E. Lee’s plan of converging attacks, Huger’s artillery fire would be the signal for divisions led by Generals A.P. Hill, James Longstreet and Stonewall Jackson to attack, but Huger’s move - one of self defense - caused the others to attack prematurely. Huger and Jackson missed the battle entirely. General Longstreet’s 20,000 men charged the main concentration of Union forces near where this marker is located. Without support from Huger and Jackson, however, the Confederate attack failed. The Federals retreated at nightfall and established a strong position at Malvern Hill.

Here, the Confederate line of Longstreet's division crossed this, the Long Bridge Road. Southeasterly one-quarter mile occurred the fiercest encounter, in which the Federal forces under McCall were forced to retire at nightfall June 30, 1862.

About the Battlefield Markers (Source: National Park Service):

This is one in a series of 61 markers erected beginning in 1925 to identify the battlefields around Richmond. The tablets were the work of the Battlefield Markers Association, a group of historians committed to commemorating the Richmond battlefields. Most prominent among the association's members was Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman, the eminent biographer of George Washington and Robert E. Lee. The work of Dr. Freeman and the Association ultimately led to the purchase of battlefield lands and the establishment of Richmond National Battlefield Park in 1936.
