This statue honors Thomas Melville Purves who is considered the founder of the city of Purvis. The inscription reads "Thomas Melville Purves born Mar 8, 1820 Marion Co., ALA died May 9, 1911 Purvis, MS Founder of the city of Purvis." Mr. Purves changed the spelling of his name to match the spelling the railroad had on the depot. This statue was placed by the Lamar County Historic Society in 1989 in celebration of the centennial of the city of Purvis.
