This is a historic marker dedicated to the Purvis tornado of 1908. The text reads: "Scene of destructive tornado on April 24, 1908. Forty-seven people were killed and more than 300 injured. Over half of the homes were destroyed. Property damage was great." THe marker is in front of the library on Shelby Speights Road.
Directions from I-59 are: take the Purvis exit (exit 51) and drive toward Purvis. At the red light turn left on Hwy 11 and drive to the first red light. There turn right onto Shelby Speights Road. Travel 4 blocks to marker and library on right.
