The cross was first mentioned before 1636 and stands at the foot of a tree, the cross, a remnant of the original Old Market Cross that was the preaching point around which Moretonhampstead first established itself as a village.
The tree has had various names over the years such as The Cross Tree, The Dancing Tree and The Punchbowl Tree.
