From the guidebook:
BEREA, 41.6 m. (943 alt., 1,827 pop.), in the foothills of the Southern Highlands, is the seat of BEREA COLLEGE (student guides at Boone Tavern), founded in 1853; this is the oldest and largest of the mountain schools in Kentucky. The 85 well-equipped brick and stone buildings of the college, and its unusually beautiful campus of about 300 acres, comprise a large part of the village.
---- KENTUCKY, A Guide to the Bluegrass State, 1939
Coordinates are for Berea city hall. Current population is thought to greatly exceed the 9,851 counted in the 2000 census. Beyond Berea College, the town has pursued developing a tourism industry based on traditional arts and crafts.
