Not far from Boston City Hall is a complex of buildings and plazas called the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, that is a very popular place for locals and tourists alike to go to.

Though the winter does dampen outdoor activity, from spring to fall, you will find a lot of people walking around and others providing all sorts of entertainment that includes unicycle tricks, magic, juggling, and singing.

The entire area is historical. Quincy Market is a long granite building with a dome on top. One building has primarily a food court. Flanking these buildings, North Market and South Market, and at the east end are additional buildings where shops and restaurants are located. A list of retail places is here: (visit link)

Faneuil Hall, which gives the commerce area its name, is not technically part of the marketplace, but is adjacent to it. A plaque tells the importance of the hall in Colonial times. The web site for Faneuil Hall Marketplace has a page for history of Faneuil Hall, here: (visit link)

It is such a treasure, it is hard to believe that at one time this area was almost demolished. By the mid 1900s the marketplace was no longer the center of merchant activity and fell into disrepair. Jim Rouse and other interested people undertook the project to reuse the buildings. In 1976, the buildings were renovated and made into a mall and eating place, now called Faneuil Hall Marketplace. This was the first such urban renovation of its kind and has been done in several other cities.
