This monument stands prominently on the courthouse lawn. It actually gleams on a sunny day. The tribute paid to this man in this small Georgia town emphasizes the gratitude the citizens of the county owe this man.
An article from the Orlando Sentinal (May 1, 1989) gives a little insight into the man himself.
For 48 years before he retired...
48 YEARS BEHIND THE BADGE.May 01, 1989JEFFERSONVILLE, GA. — 48 YEARS BEHIND THE BADGE. For 48 years before he retired Dec. 31, Earl Hamrick was the law in Twiggs County. A marble marker was unveiled on the courthouse lawn Saturday as part of ceremonies honoring him as the nation's longest-serving sheriff. Hamrick, believed to be 86 years old, thanked the people of Twiggs County for electing him over the years. ''I go to conventions and Yankees ask me how come I keep getting elected,'' he said. ''I tell them, 'Just being a dang good sheriff is all I know!' ''
