In the Forannes district of Saint Veran, along the main street is an 1840 Zarbula sundial restored by Evelyne and Norbert Peyrot. The Zarbula style features include two exotic birds, a Templar cross in the sun, and and an equatorial line. This is an afternoon dial declining west of south,. The motto is the usual “ Sans le soleil je suis rein et toi, sans Dieu, tu ne peut rein”. Note the reflection of the surrounding mountains in the picture.

Saint Veran is proud of its altitude, 2040 m, the highest village in Europe where they bake bread. The statement “mange le pain” I take to mean to grow grain and bake bread not just eat what is delivered to the “depot du pain”. The motto of the village is “Saint Veran, le pays où les coqs picorent les étoiles’ (Saint Veran, the country where the roosters peck at the stars.)

Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
