Built in 1719 as the residence of a prominent merchant, sold by his heirs in 1762 to Samuel Fraunces, who turned it into a popular tavern.
A meeting place of the Sons of Liberty prior to the revolution; when New York was the capital of the US, the building was rented to house the Departments of War, Treasury and Foreign Affairs.
Today, the building is owned by the Sons of Liberty and operated as a museum and restaurant (though there are nothing but salads on the menu).
