The original Wild Boar was reportedly done in marble by a Greek or Roman artist. A plaster mold was made by Renaissance sculptor Pietro Tacca (1577-1540).
In 1857, Giuseppi Benelli, working in Florence from Tacca's original plaster mold, cast a bronze boar, "Il Porcellino". Several casts of the 1857 boar have reportedly been made, including this one in Lyndonville and another in New York.
The Lyndonville boar was a gift to the village by Luther B. Harris, president of the Lyndonville National Bank. An amateur sculptor himself, Harris chiseled the foundation for the statue. It is known locally as Barfing Boar or Puking Pig, for the water trickling from its mouth.
