Wollongong Harbour History Walk NO 13.
On Guard!
Completed in 1893 to defend the approaches to Wollongong Harbour against possible Russian attach, the fort remains as one of the few Australian colonial defence works still in existence. Housed within the fort's 64 metre long wall are three gun emplacements and several underground ammunitian rooms. Of the three original guns tow are still in place. These guns are 80 pounder muzzle loaders built at England's Royal Gun Factory in 1872. Each gun was capable of firing a shell weighing nearly 35kg (80 pounds) over a distance of 2,000 metres. The third gun, removed in the early 1900's was a 1 1/2 calibre quick firing gun. The guns were never fired in anger. At one stage the fort was manned by Wollongon-Bulli Volunteer Artillery Half Companies. Improvements in naval gunnery technology made the fort obsolete by 1907. The fortifications were buried in 1947.
