This historic marker is located on Route 219 near Droop Mountain in Pocahontas County. The text of the marker reads:

"The clean massive Droop Sandstone in the road cut is the "Maxon Sand" of the driller. The "Maxon Sand" yields oil and natural gas at depths of over 1000 feet in southern and central West Virginia.

Note: Parking is limited to the gravel shoulder of Route 219. USE CAUTION IF YOU STOP TO VISIT THIS MARKER.
